Although sociology has its roots in the work of philosophers like Plato, Aristotle and Confucius, it is relatively a new academic discipline. It emerged in the early 19th century in response to the challenges of modernity. The term sociology was coined by French philosopher Auguste Comte in 1939 who for this reason is known as the “Father of Sociology. “ There was an urge in Western academia to study society through the lens of natural science, which gave a significant impetus to establish sociology department in European and non-European countries. The university of Chicago established the first graduate department of Sociology in the United States in 1892. Now, most colleges and universities are teaching sociology as a separate discipline. The growth of Sociology as an academic discipline in Bangladesh coincided with the establishment and upgrading of many universities that were including a new focus on graduate department as modern subject. In the line of expansion of higher education Dhaka University, Rajshahi University, Chittagong University, Jagannath University, Shahjalal University of science and technology offers honours and masters degree in Sociology. Besides, National University that controls the all graduate colleges in Bangladesh makes a vast opportunity to the students offering this subject in honours and masters level. Though Dhaka college has a glorious past in the history but sociology has grown into a diverse and dynamic discipline in the late 20th century. Department of Sociology is a highly demanding department in the college. The department began its journey at Dhaka college in 1996 under the guidance of Nazma Hamid. Admissions are based on an entrance test. The department provides education to the students in both Bengali and English medium under Dhaka University. Many renowned professors have performed well in the development of the department. Professor Fahima khatun (later DG, Secondary and Higher Education, Bangladesh) is one of them. Now, professor Afroza Begum honourable chairperson as well as team leader is running the department making a cordial bridge with the colleges and the students.
