Sociology, rooted in the ideas of Plato, Aristotle, and Confucius, emerged as an academic discipline in the 19th century. Auguste Comte coined the term in 1839, earning him the title “Father of Sociology.” The field grew globally, with the University of Chicago establishing the first graduate department in 1892. In Bangladesh, sociology expanded alongside university development, with Dhaka, Rajshahi, Chittagong, Jagannath, and Shahjalal Universities offering Honors and Master’s degrees. National University also provides opportunities in this field. Dhaka College introduced its Sociology Department in 1996 under Nazma Hamid. Admission is based on entrance exams, and courses are taught in Bengali and English under Dhaka University. Notable figures like Professor Fahima Khatun contributed to its growth. Currently, Professor Afroza Begum leads the department, fostering academic excellence.
