The Department of English at Dhaka College has a long-standing tradition and a unique history. Established in 1841, Dhaka College began offering the English honors course in the early 1890s under Calcutta University. However, the program was abruptly discontinued in the 1920s. In the early 1980s, the honors course resumed under Dhaka University, at a time when very few colleges in Bangladesh offered English honors. In 1997, the program came under the authority of the National University as it launched honors courses in various colleges. Following this, the department introduced the MA final course in English in 1999. Today, around 1,000 students are enrolled in the honors and MA programs, continuing the department’s legacy of academic excellence and contributing to the literary and linguistic education of students across the nation.
